February 8, 2012 Seeking to be bailed to the Ashburton address of a former partner did not work for Michael Curry. The 32-year-old was remanded in custody on a charge of injuring with intent to injure to February 20 for an electronically-monitored bail application.Lawyer Roz Burnside pointed out the house where her client was wanting to be bailed to was across the other side of town to the victim. He had indicated he wished to enter a not guilty plea. He had seen the incident from which the charge arose as something which had arisen from a playful approach to his flatmates. It had ended in a fight between him and the victim on the floor. "In the end this seems a very heavy charge for him to be facing," Ms Burnside said. Sergeant Mylen Hamilton said police would oppose bail. Curry had breached court orders on more than one occasion, and alcohol was his downfall. The address provided was the house of an ex-partner, and police had attended domestic disputes there in the past. Ms Burnside said there were two other possible addresses he could be bailed to. "He's in custody because of violent offending and he's wanting to be bailed somewhere where police have been called previously," Judge Jane McMeeken said. He was in his early 30s and showed no sign of criminal activity reducing, and had spent a long time in jail.
