Around 230 expressions of interest have also been received for the February intake and more courses will start during the year, meaning more students on campus. Marketing and communications manager, Bronwyn Hargraves, said they needed more people to consider studying locally in order to make a permanent expansion. "Any expansion needs to be carefully considered in order to maximise the use of facilities but we're still committed to delivering quality education in the Ashburton region," she said. While some courses had been canned at other campuses, she did not believe the increase in student numbers here was a direct impact. "The increase is probably due to several factors. "We are seeing enrolments coming in earlier across all our campuses and people are also getting in early because they don't want to miss out. "There could also be an increase in people staying locally rather than moving away due to Ashburton's good economic situation," she said. Enrolments will be taken right up to the start date on February 20. Courses will include arts, business, life skills, parenting and care of children, beauty and a certificate in professional office management which has received a lot of interest this year. The successful free bus service to Timaru will also continue, providing more opportunities for local students studying courses not offered at the Ashburton campus. The initiative was popular last year, with 48 Ashburton people taking advantage. Enquiries for 2012 suggest a similar number this year.
