Summer school enrolments 'pleasing'

By Susan Sandys  December 21 2011

Methven Summer School organisers are pleased with more than 250 enrolments to date.

Committee chairperson Sharryn Bree said with still more than two weeks to go before the school begins on January 9, enrolments had already exceeded last year's numbers.
It had been hard work for the summer school committee, which did not employ a co-ordinator this year, to organise the extensive range of courses, but feedback had been positive.
"It's been lots of hard work, but it's paid off," Ms Bree said.
There were 36 courses on the programme and to date just three have been cancelled due to not enough enrolments.
These include two courses in the traditionally popular subject of pastel painting, and one in cable scarf making.
Classes already booked out include home cheesemaking, how to play the ukelele, ironwork and photography.
Most courses have enough enrolments to run and have some spaces remaining.
They include Suzie Millichamp's two-day Figure Painting and Debbie Lambert's three-day Oils in the High Country.
In the Body and Mind category, Alison Ogier-Price's one-day course of The Science and Art of Happiness has seven enrolments, with about another five spaces left.
Ms Bree particularly wanted to promote this course and was keeping the registration fee at the early bird price, as she did not want Ms Ogier-Price's remarkable skills to go to waste.
She said while the course might very well have an airy-fairy sounding name, it was anything but. Ms Ogier-Price, a Canterbury University researcher and a psychologist, gave motivational lectures to companies in Christchurch.
"We are actually paying her a minimal amount to what she gets paid by these companies," Ms Bree said.
"You don't have to be unhappy to go, it's just giving you the tools to go forward and be happy."
It will be the 25th Methven Summer School and there will be a celebratory event during the week, compered by Linda Topp.
