Susie Hayward and Andretti are starting in the Senior Horse Grand Prix. The pair has been in reasonable form this season but will want to rise to the occasion. Although the premier class is a little short on numbers, the Senior Championship boasts an all-star line-up including two-time Olympian Daniel Meech on Argento, Christchurch riders Ross Smith on Quite Cassini and Carrisa McGregor on Chatterton with Tessa Williams from Gisborne riding Alltech Craighaven Nitro. Three local juniors will contest the Pony Grand Prix with Emma Waite, Lucinda Askin and Kimberley Bird all chasing the title. Waite is also in good form, steering Spring Brooke to victory at the South Canterbury North Otago Showjumping's Championship Show in Waimate in late January. Askin and Bird have had seasons to remember so far with the highlight being a trip to South Africa where they were part of the four-strong New Zealand junior team that took out the tri nations International Classique. Bird enters the nationals as the highest ranks South Island rider and has two mounts in Brenwood Stevie James and Showtym Image while Askin enters on Totem. Askin is also in the 1.10m pony championship on Mahoe Moon Frost where she is up against Jaime Bird and Bucc-a-boo and in the Amateur Rider Annabelle Askin will ride Bellagio. Candace Bell will ride Miss Serendipity II in the 1.10m horse championship up against Elizabeth Bell and Mr Benetton. Zoe Shore will be in the1.20m horse championship on board Olympia NZPH, and then Boulevard II in the 1.10m event. The event has attracted some of the big names in the sport, including a huge contingent of North Island riders, competing for national honours, not to mention vital national series' points.
