Prints make their mark on club cricket

By Erin Tasker  February 6, 2012

The return of two brothers helped steer Coldstream to an upset over Fairfield in senior cricket's Muirhead Rosebowl competition on Saturday.

Richard and Jonathan Print both fired with the bat and helped their side to a much needed victory as the competition heads into the home stretch.
Fairfield went into the round in second placed behind Allenton, who had the bye, but the loss to Coldstream was its second in a row.
040212-JH_205Tom_MeyrickWith the finals just around the corner, three will miss out and the race is on to see just who will be there at the end.
In the day's two remaining games the two Tech sides were hardly troubled, with the Tech Stags too good for Methven and the defending champion Tech Sharks four wicket winners against Lauriston.

Fairfield v Coldstream

Coldstream welcomed back the Print brothers - Richard and Jonathan - with open arms on Saturday after a two week absence from club cricket, and the pair made their presence felt in their side's three wicket win over Fairfield.
Fairfield batted first and managed 202/9 with Bo Houston top scoring with 59, while Jason Harrison took 4/28 for Coldstream and Richard Print 4/40.
Harrison's form didn't continue when he picked up the bat though, out on the first ball of the innings, but two of four Prints who took to the field on Saturday, soon came together at the crease to set their side up for the win.
Richard and younger brother Jonathan - who were playing alongside a third brother and their dad - both showed they're in top form with the bat, with Jonathan following up last weekend's maiden century for Mid Canterbury in the Hawke Cup by scoring 78 for his club.
Richard contributed a further 45 to Coldstream's tally, while Jonathan Beams, playing only his second game this season, chipped in with a handy 20 not out to see his side home.
Coldstream reached the target with seven wickets down and Fair-field's bowlers shared the wickets around, with no one taking more than two.
Coldstream is now two wins from four matches, and both wins have come against fancied opposition.
They completely annihilated the Tech Sharks in round one.

Methven v Tech Stags

The Tech Stags recovered from a batting collapse in Methven to post a total of 192, which proved too much for Methven, with the Stags winning by 71 runs.
The Stags, coming off a convincing loss to the Tech Sharks in the last round, batted first and were struggling at 70/6 at one stage before Tom Meyrick steered them to what turned out to be an unreachable total.
Meyrick top-scored with 85 while Jayden Faunge chimed in with 21.
For Methven's bowlers, three bowlers took three wickets each, with Ashley Mills finishing with 3/14, Ben Kitching 3/44 and Ben Payne 3/55.
In reply, Methven lost its first wicket with 31 runs on the board and lost its second without adding any more runs to the total.
From there it was all downhill and they were all out for 121 in the 29th over.
Tom Suyker was Methven's top runs scorer with 32, followed by Payne with 17 and Pete Shearer with 16, while Harry Jones took 3/14 off just 2.2 overs for the Stags.
Faunge also fired with the ball taking 3/21 as did Meyrick, taking 2/30.
As the countdown to the finals continues, Methven's only win from the four matches so far has come against Coldstream.

Lauriston v Tech Sharks

Lauriston could only manage 87 batting first against the Tech Sharks.
And against a side which has consistently been the one to beat in senior cricket in the past couple of years, they were always going to struggle.
The defending Muirhead Rose-bowl champions ripped through the Lauriston batting line-up, with Bevan Richen and Nick Gilbert offering the only real resistance.
Ben Crequer ended up with figures of 3/15 off six overs for the Tech Sharks, and Hayden Sinclair 2/12 off seven overs.
The Sharks had few issues reaching the target within six overs, but did end up six down after losing three wickets with only four runs needed to win.
Jason Morrison was the day's top scorer with 47.
The Sharks lost in round one, then had the bye, and came back to beat the Tech Stags in round three to put them in sight of the finals.
