Top golfers to grace Ashburton fairways

By Jonathan Leask  February 4, 2012

Top golfers from Australasia are about to walk the fairways of the Ashburton District.

The Legends Pro-am tour returns with a two-day stopover starting at Terrace Downs on February 15 and then heads to the Ashburton Golf Club the following day.
Heading the list at Terrace Downs will be Sir Bob Charles, who played the Ashburton leg of the tour last year but will not return as one of the 35 professionals at Ashburton this year.
Ken Tarling was last year’s winner at Ashburton and also finished top of the 2011 order of merit but is absent this year.
Timaru golfer Peter Hayes, who only turned professional last year, is one to watch. Hayes finished second equal last year and has the advantage of knowing the course back to front from his years of being the number one in the Aorangi region.
Otago’s Garth Domigan was the fellow runner up last year and will be out to go one better.
Over the four tournaments played so far this year Mike Zilko is fourth on the order of merit, David Hill is sixth and Hugh Dolan ninth.
Victorian Kym Olsen made an impression in qualifying for the tour, finishing 14 shots clear in the three round qualifying tournament.
The quality golfers will join more than 90 local players at the Ashburton Golf Club
