| Methven moves up to top grade |
|
By Erin Bishop July 29 2009 Methven’s first grade men’s hockey team has saved the day in the Mid/South Canterbury senior men’s competition. With the seven team competition due to be split into top four and bottom four this weekend, Methven has accepted an invitation to become that eighth team and play in the senior competition for the next six weeks. Methven has been having a strong season and is on track to take out the first grade competition this year, and was excited to take up the invitation to step it up a notch, team spokesperson Jan Middleton said. She said the team was a real mixture of players, with a number of senior and senior B rugby players in the mix, as well as some young 18-year-olds who last year played in the Mount Hutt College team, and some former representative players. With the Methven rugby seniors playing in this weekend’s Watters Cup final, a Saturday game was not going to work this week, so the Methven team’s first senior game was set to be against Tinwald at Derlen Bakery Park tomorrow night at 8pm. Wakanui, now the third Mid Canterbury team in the combined competition, will take on Temuka in the top four competition in Ashburton on Saturday. |
