By Jonathan Leask March 9 2010 The Ashburton Speedway held its first race meeting of the year on Sunday, with solid fields across all the grades returning for another season of racing. It was a great day of racing for the club, with the hot conditions meaning the track required a lot of water, which made the day a little bit longer but provided the competitors with a fast track. The A grade grand prix was taken out by Matthew Anderson, who took the chequered flag ahead of Craig Shaw with Dave Young rounding out the top three. In the B grade Mid Canterbury grand prix Allan Kirk was first past the post, followed by Peter Kirk and Jason Fraser. Phillip Coxshall claimed the honours in C Grade where Steve Crow took second ahead of Amy Young. Alex Boreham took the youth ministock grand prix, with James Thain second and in third was Barton Dick. All three will feature in the upcoming final of the youth ministock series that has had races in Ashburton, Ruapuna, Cromwell and Dunedin with the final to be held in Ashburton. In the Adult Ministocks it was Renea Murray who claimed the top spot, with second placed taken by Amy Jory and Brad Triggs finished third. It was a close contest in the flat track bikes competition, but Justin White crossed the line first in the two wheel racing. Graeme White followed in behind in second with Trevor Collings taking the final spot on the podium. John Grey drove a solid race to take out the stockcars race beating John Galbraith and Josh McGregor. The next race meeting looms as a big day for the Ashburton speedway as it will host with the final of the youth ministock series. But the biggest event on the calendar comes at the start of May when the club host two New Zealand title races.
