The Ashburton Swim Team competed at the AquaGym Challenge meet in Dunedin over the weekend.
Aquagym is a Christchurch club whose QEII home is unusable, so moved its annual race meet to Dunedin. It was the first long-course meet of the season for the Ashburton swimmers with a team of 20 making the journey, mainly made up of junior members. The standout effort of the day was by new club member Josh Harkness who in his first meet with the club qualified for the junior nationals. Lucy Clough was also able to record another qualifying time for the juniors while Grace Sommerville also had a solid meet. For a number of the swimmers who travelled down it was their first long-course meet or first time travelling such distance to compete. The senior members of the club will have to travel even further for another taste of long-course action with coach Carl Gordon planning an excursion to Invercargill for the Southland champs to give his swimmers more long-course competition.
