Young farmers set to do battle

November 1 2011

Mid Canterbury Young Farmers start their quest this week for success in the National Bank Young Farmer of the Year contest.

They will be competing in a district final in Ashburton on November 5, with the best heading to the Aorangi regional final in Oamaru next February.
The winner of the regional final will contest the grand final in Dunedin from May 23-26.
Mid Canterbury has a proud tradition of national success, with Pendarves dairy farmer Will Grayling the 2011 young farmer of the year.
The current champion said young farmers of all skill levels should enter to improve their personal and agricultural skills.
"Definitely enter! If you're hesitant, do it with a friend so you don't feel like you are the only one not feeling confident.
"It is nerve-racking the first time but you will look back, learn from it, and come back the second time determined to improve and hopefully achieve what you want, which might be to make the top eight or win the grand final."
However Mr Grayling said it was not all about winning.
"It's a great way to test yourself if you're a competitive person; but the best part is you are certain to learn something and meet and interact with worthwhile and like-minded people."
The contest is not just about practical farming tasks.
Contestants are put through a diverse array of practical, theoretical and technical farming challenges.
Young Farmers national CEO Richard Fitzgerald said around 300 contestants were expected to take part in the first round of the contest, at district level.
"Competing in the contest is good for you and your career," Mr Fitzgerald said.
"Apart from the great prizes, people learn useful farm business skills and have an opportunity to show their ability.
"It is a great stepping stone for your agricultural career, or simply just a great experience."
The contest is in its 44th year.
