Golfers battle the elements

January 4 2010

The Tinwald Golf Club’s annual New Year tournament is gaining a reputation as something of an extreme event.

Kittikote.jpgThe weather often dictates fortunes on the day – the temperature is either soaring, or freezing, or a nor’west wind is blowing balls off course.

The 2010 tournament on Saturday started out a scorcher, with the temperature on-course at 9am 30 degrees Celsius.

But by 3pm, some of the 118 golfers still finishing their round were hunting for jackets.

Organiser Bruce Collins said some good stableford scores were posted for the day, with Paul Gray (playing on his home course) the best of the men with 46 points.

Ian Hoskin racked up 44 points for second and Perry Hunt 43 for third.

In the women’s competition, home-course golfers had the inside running.

Val Cartney was the best on 43 points, Barb McGregor next on 41 and Shirley Young finished in third place in the competition on 40.
