Dairy awards judging under way
February 9, 2012
Judging has begun in the rigorous process to select winners in the 2012 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards. Mid Canterbury dairy farmers must first succeed at regional level, winning the Canterbury-North Otago event in categories for best sharemilker/equity farmer, best farm manager and best dairy trainee.
Entries regionally are on a par with last year, with 59 in total, while nationally a record 525 entrants will face the judges.
Preliminary judging for the dairy trainee of the year began this week.
Preliminary judging in the sharemilker/equity farmer and farm manager of the year contest begins next week; entrants have two hours to impress judges during their on-farm visit.
Canterbury-North Otago winners will be announced at a special evening at the Hotel Ashburton on March 28.
The national final will be in Wellington on May 12.
National convenor Chris Keeping said all the entrants gained by taking part – by either meeting new people, learning something about themselves, setting new goals or by making improvements to their farm business.
Mrs Keeping said it was important for entrants to make an impact on the judges.
“We try to encourage them to be original and unique, and to really demonstrate their passion for dairy farming.
“They should also outline their future plans and career goals.”
She said those who gain the most from judging are the best organised.
It is recommended entrants read the judging criteria, seek advice from past entrants about what to expect, have a practice run-through and avoid any distractions.
Entrants in the dairy trainee contest will compete in a 30-minute practical session in a central location, as part of their judging criteria.
