| Door-to-door rapist |

July 20 2011 A convicted rapist who is not allowed contact with any one under the age of 16 has been going door-to-door as a salesperson in Ashburton. John Clarke lied to the Department of Corrections in order to do his job as a door-to-door salesman in Canterbury, according to media reports this week.In 1997, Clarke kidnapped and raped a 15-year-old girl who he had offered a ride from Lyttelton. He was already on bail for another attack on a woman when he attacked and strangled the girl near Governors Bay, and was jailed for 11 years. A concerned Tinwald resident contacted the Guardian after reading about Clarke, who now goes by the name John Connor, who had worked with a contractor for Sky TV since February. The resident said a man who said his name was John Connor knocked on his door on June 17. They brought an aerial and it was later installed by a contractor, not Connor. The resident said he'd had his doubts about Clarke and recognised his face – the eyes in particular – when he saw his picture in a newspaper this week. Others also recognised him, with a sighting in Sockburn, Christchurch, leading to his being found out on his lies, by the Department of Corrections. Clarke was likely to face a charge of breaching an extended supervision order. He was concerned because not only had Connor knocked on his door, he had also knocked on the doors of his neighbours, including a woman with a young child. He had reported to police the fact that Connor had been in Ashburton. Clarke has since been dismissed from his job with Sky TV.
