Chase called off
A car believed to have been stolen earlier in the night, led Ashburton police on a brief but speedy pursuit on Thursday night. The car reached speeds of at least 178km/h during the pursuit before police decided it was too dangerous and abandoned the chase.
 
Meteor magic

The Ashburton Aviation Museum is on the way to having New Zealand's premier jet collection with their latest addition, the Gloster Meteor. Since they first brokered the deal to buy the Meteor the museum has since been engaged in a bidding battle for a Soviet MiG-21 Fishbed, a cold war classic.

It may not have been the answer some wanted, but Ashburton's museum and art gallery have been given the nod and will be granted a resource consent. Reaching the consenting stage has involved a long round of consultation, debate and discussions. Submissions were called, submissions were made. A hearing was held and yesterday a decision was announced. The project's supporters will be elated. Arts and history will both have a new, purpose-built facility, one that will showcase both and will also, in the case of the museum, preserve our past for the future.

 
Heartland squad finalised

Mid Canterbury has finalised its squad for the heartland rugby campaign and has confirmed its quota of three import players and a player of origin. The mixture sees two forwards and two backs with four new faces joining several other new players in the squad for the 2010 campaign.
